| Term | Definition |

| mixture | two or more substances added together and can be separated by physical means |
| solvent | substance that is present in the greater amount |
| solute | substance that is present in the smaller amount |
| alloy | a mixture of different types of metals |
| heterogeneous mixtures | all samples of a mixture are different |
| homogeneous mixtures | all samples of a mixture are the same |
| heterogeneous suspensions | particles can be seen, are temporarily mixed in a liquid, and will separate if left standing |
| homogeneous solution | particles cannot be seen and will not separate if left standing |
| homogeneous colloid | properties between a solution and suspension, particles do not separate after standing, and can be seen |
| heterogeneous examples | oil and vinegar, sand and water, raisin bread |
| homogeneous examples | blood, soft drinks, gasoline, seawater |
| colloid examples | smoke, milk, fog, mayonnaise, egg white, shaving cream |
