Science Plant Quiz

QuestionAnswer
What is the formula for photosynthesis? Energy + CO2 + H2O = gluclose + O2
What is the formula for respiration? Gluclose + O2 = Energy + CO2 + H2O
Why is photosynthesis important? It gives plants gluclose (food)
What is fertilization? When the egg and sperm come together
What is an ovule and what does it develop into after fertilization? It is the egg and it turns into a seed
What does the ovary develop into after fertilization? It is where the eggs are and it turns into the fruit
What do seeds need to germinate? Water, air, and a suitable temperature is needed for this process
Transpiration The process by which water passes from the inside of a leaf to the atmosphere
Photosynthesis The process by which a plant makes its own food
Tropism Growth in response to a stimulus. A stimulus causes a change in the plant
Deciduous Plants A plant that shed their leaves at the same time each year
Cellular Respiration The process by which all organisms use oxygen to produce energy from food
Dormant Describes the inactive state of a seed or other plant part when conditions are unfavorable to growth
Phototropism A change in the direction a plant grows that is caused by light. Cells on one side of the shoot grow longer than cells on the other side of the shoot
Evergreen Plants Plants that shed their leaves year-round, so these trees have leaves all year round
Chlorophyll The green pigment that makes a plant green and captures sunlight
Pollination The transfer of pollen from an anther to a stigma in the same flower or in a different flower of the same species
Gravitropism A plant's growth in response to gravity.
Thigmotropism A plant's growth in response to touch
What is the scientific name for the Wisconsin Fast Plants? Brassica rapa
What is the scientific name for the cabbage white butterfly? Pieris rapae
6 things needed by plants to grow and develop Gluclose, Light, Water, Air, Temperature, and Minerals
To be considered food, a substance must provide what? Energy
True or False: Minerals also provide energy to plants? False
How do minerals enter the plants? Plants absorb them from the soil through their root systems
How many minerals do plants need? 13
Name the 3 macronutrients: nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium
Which macronutrient promotes strong healthy roots? Phosphorus
Which macronutrient promotes growth of healthy leaves? Nitrogen
Which macronutrient protect plants from temperature changes and protects them from disease? Potassium
Which is better too much or too little fertilizer and why? Too little fertilizer is better because too much fertilizer may cause poisonous mineral salts to build up in the soil and damage the roots. This can be fatal to plants.
How long does it take for Fast Plants to go through their life cycle? 6 weeks
Other than Fast Plants, name some members of the Crucifers family: Cabbage, Cauliflower, Brussels Sprouts
What was Greenhouse-3? Astronauts that planted seeds and saw whether they would germinate, grow, flower, and produce seeds in microgravity, a nearly weightless environment
Where does germination usually take place? Underground
Since most seeds are in a dormant state, what protects it from extreme temperatures? Tough Seed Coat
What does the embryo contain? The beginning of the root, stem, leaves
What is the name of the food-storing tissue in a seed? Endosperm
What is a cotyledon? Something contained in the seed that are one or more seed leaves
What are root hairs? Microscopic, fingerlike extensions of the outer cells of the roots that give the root more surface area through which water and minerals may enter the plant. The provide energy for the developing plant
