Earthquake Waves
All about earth quakes yay fun.
| Term | Definition |

| earthquake | a sudden and violent shaking of the ground, sometimes causing great destruction, as a result of movements within the earth's crust |
| focus | the point of origin of an earthquake |
| epicenter | The point that the earthquake hits. |
| elastic rebound | as rocks gain energy they bend then when it's too much they snap back into place causing a lot of energy. |
| after shock | Small tremors after the initial quake. |
| fore shock | Small tremors before the initial quake. |
| intensity | how much an earthquake shakes |
| magnitude | The size of the earthquake |
| Mercalli scale | The amount of damage an earthquake does to man made objects or people. |
| Ritcher scale | scale that ranks earthquake magnitude based on seismograms. |
| seismograph | The object used to make seismogram. |
| seismogram | A reading of how much an earthquake shakes. |
| wave | Disturbance that transmits energy |
| transverse wave | Wave particles vibrate perpendicular to wave direction |
| longitudinal wave | Wave particles vibrate parallel to wave direction |
| medium | Material a wave moves through |
| crest | Upward displacement |
| through | downward displacement |
| amplitude | Height of a wave |
| wavelength | Difference between consecutive waves. |
| P waves | Primary body wave (earthquake); fastest; least damaging |
| S waves | Secondary body waves (earthquake); Slower; More damaging |
| surface waves | The largest, slowest waves. Most damaging. |
| travel-time graph | something that I do not know. |
| triangulation | formation of or division into triangles. |
