Rock Descriptions

Physical descriptions of familiar rocks

TermDefinition
Obsidian A smooth, glassy, black rock
Pumice Light in color; lightest in mass compared to other samples
Sandstone Pinkish in color; gritty in texture
Soapstone Marblish, greenish in color; smooth and "soap-like" in texture
Marble White in color and crystalline in appearance
Granite speckled in color, rougher than obsidian. Looks like kitchen countertop.
