Photosynthesis
Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration Review Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Photosynthesis | A process in which light energy, water, and carbon dioxide are used to create glucose for energy. Converts light energy to chemical energy. |
| Cellular Respiration | A process that breaks down glucose into energy (ATP). This provides useable energy to cells in all eukaryotic organisms. |
| Stomata | Tiny pores, or openings, in leaves of plants that allow gases like carbon dioxide and oxygen to enter and exit the plant. |
| Carbon Dioxide | A gas molecule absorbed by photosynthesis and released by cellular respiration |
| Oxygen | A gas molecule released by photosynthesis and required for cellular respiration |
| Glucose | Also known as C6H12O6, this large sugar molecule is produced during photosynthesis and contains potential energy |
| Water | A reactant in photosynthesis absorbed by plants through their roots |
| Autotroph | "Self Feeding" -- Organisms that are able to create their own food, often using photosynthesis |
| Heterotroph | "Other Feeders" -- Organisms that are unable to create their own food and must consume other organisms for energy |
| Mitochondria | A cellular organelle; the site of cellular respiration |
| Chloroplast | A cellular organelle; the site of photosynthesis |
| Light Reactions | The "photo" part of photosynthesis -- the portion of photosynthesis that absorbs sunlight in the thylakoid membranes |
| Dark Reactions | The "synthesis" part of photosynthesis -- this step does not require light and instead builds the glucose molecule |
| Aerobic Respiration | Typical cellular respiration is known as ________ _________ , because it requires oxygen. |
| Anaerobic Respiration | This type of respiration occurs when no oxygen is present. This may occur in our muscle cells during periods of extreme exercise, or in yeast found in bread dough causing the bread to rise. |
| Cellulose | A complex sugar that gives plants strength and can not be digested by humans |
| Starch | A large carbohydrate that stores energy in plants. Found in potatoes, corn, and rice. |
| Chlorophyll | A green pigment found within the chloroplasts of a plant. Involved in photosynthesis. |
