Federal Pesticide Laws

| FIFRA | Federal Insecticide Fungicide and Rodenticide Act |
| EPA | Environmental Protection Agency |
| Unclassified use | more commonly referred to as general-use pesticides. Few pesticides have been classified this way... lower toxicity and less potential to harm humans or the environment. |
| Restricted use (RUP) | These pesticides might result in bad effects on human health or the environment and should only be used by trained professionals. |
| Certified Applicator | An individual who has been recognized by the government as being ready to handle restricted pesticides. |
| Private applicator | Someone who has been certified to use RUPs for agricultural needs on his or her own property. |
| Commercial applicator | A person certified to use RUPs on public property... |
| State lead agency | The agency that the state agrees with the EPA to use to enforce the FIFRA |
| Pesticide Registration | No pesticide can be registered or offered for sale unless it has the proper labeling. |
| EUP | Eperimental Use Permit: EUPs allow manufacturers to field test pesticides to gather data. |
| Biopesticides | Pesticides made from natural materials. These pesticides are still required to be field tested under a EUP type permit. |
| Pesticide Re-registration | The government has been testing pesticides that were originally registered before November 1st 1984 to see their effects and effectiveness. These pesticides have to be retested to qualify for re-registration. |
| Tolerance Levels | The levels set by the EPA for the amounts of pesticides left on/ in a food that can be safely consumed by humans and animals. |

| FQPA | Food Quality Protection Act: signed in 1996 helps US food meet safety requirements. |
| Violative Acts | Things that people could do to break the FIFRA law. (Page 24) |
| Civil Penalties | Penalites that could result in money being awarded to the person who wins the case if shomeone uses the pesticides wrong. |
| Criminal Pentalities | Fines and also possible imprisionment for using the pesticides wrong. |
| Label is the law. | This is a warning on every pesticide reminding users that they must use the pesticide according to the lable. |
| FFDCA | Federal Food Drug and Cosmetics Act. |
| WPS | Worker Protection Standard: this act helps protect workers against dangerous situations and chemicals. |
| ESA | Endangered Species Act: Makes it illeagle to kill, harm, or collect any endangered plant or animal. |
| Application Records | Keeping records meets the requirements of the law and is a good idea to protect yourself as you work with these chemicals. |
