| Term | Definition |

| Release of pressure | the underlying rocks expand and fracture parallel to the surface. |
| Freezing and thawing | When water gets into a crack the water will freeze expand then thaw and do it over again. |
| Ice wedging | When there is a crack in rock and water gets in it then freezes and expands and breaks the rock. |
| Abrasion | The grinding and wearing away of rock surfaces through the mechanical action of other rock or sand particles. |

| Plant activity | Plants often send their roots into existing cracks and rocks. Then when they get older they get stronger and eventually widenthe crack and break the rock. |
| Animal activity | They burrow tthrough the soil and move soil particles around. |
