Mitosis

TermDefinition
The life cycle of a cell is known as the? Cell cycle
Before a cell divides it must make a copy of the? DNA
DNA contains info on how to make? Proteins
DNA is organized in structures called? Chromosomes
Bacteria (prokaryotes) undergo a cell division called? Binary Fission.
Prokaryotes have how many chromosomes per cell? One
Eukaryotes (plants and animals) undergo a cell division called? Mitosis
How many chromosomes do eukaryotes have? More than one chromosome per cell
Human body cells are made of how many chromosomes? 23 pairs that means 46 homologous chromosomes
Homologous means? similar.
After each chromosome is copied it consists of how many chromatids? Two
Centromere The spot where the two chromatids are held together
Centrioles Cylindrical structures which separate the chromatids
Equator The center of the cell where the chromatids line up to be separated
What happens during interphase? Chromosomes and centrioles and other cell material are copied.
What happens during prophase? Nuclear membrane breaks apart, chromosomes condense to rods,
What else happens during prophase? Centrioles move to opposite ends,
What else happens during prophase? Fibers form attaching the centrioles to the centromers.
What happens during metaphase? Chromosomes line up at equator.
What happens during anaphase? Chromatids are separated by the fibers attached to the centrioles.
What happens during telophase? Nuclear membranes form around the two new nuclei, fibers from centrioles disappear
Cytokines is? The splitting of the cytoplasm into two parts.
How do animal cells perform cytokinesis? By pinching the cell membrane inwards.
How do plant cells perform cytokinesis? Formation of a cell plate, which grows outward from the center of the cell.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
