Chapter 10
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Infiltration | process by which precipition has fallen on land and trickles into the ground becoming groundwater. |
| Zone of Saturation | Groundwater completely fills all the pores of a material. |
| Water table | Upper boundary of the zone of saturation. |
| Zone of aeration | Above the water table, moist, but not saturated with water. |
| permeability | Tendancy of a material to let water pass through. |
| aquifer | Ground water flows throught permable sediments. |
| aquiclude | barriers to groundwater flow. |
| spring | These natural discharges of groundwater. |
| hot spring | warm water depending on the temperature. |
| geyser | Explosive hot springs. |
| Cave | Underground opening with a connection on Earths surface. |
| Sinkhole | A depression in the ground caused by the collapse of a cave or by direct dissolution of limestone. |
| Karst topography | Limestone regions that have sinkholes and disappearing streams. |
| Stalactite | Hangs from the caves ceiling like icicles and forms gradually. |
| stalagmites | Water drips on the floor of a cave. |
| Wells | Holes dug or drilled into the ground to reach an aquifer. |
| Drawdown | Original water table level and the water level in the pumped well. |
| Recharge | Water from precipitation replenishes the water content of an aquifer. |
| Artesian well | Recharge is high enough, the pressurized water in the well drilled into an artesian aquifer can spurt above the land surface in the form of a fountain. |
