Microscope Review
Terms, people, and microscope parts
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| microscope | an instrument (tool) that makes objects appear larger |
| simple microscope | a microscope with one lens |
| compound microscope | a microscope that uses two lenses |
| specimen | what is being observed or viewed |
| electron microscope | a microscope that uses beams of electrons to produce a magnified image |
| Robert Hooke | He used a compound microscope to view a slice of cork and called tiny rooms he saw "cells." |
| Anton van Leeuwenhoek | He used a simple microscope to view lake water and called tiny organisms "animalcules." |
| total magnification | calculated by multiplying the power of the eyepiece by the power of the objective lens |
| eyepiece | lens closest to the eye |
| high power objective | the middle length objective lens |
| low power objective | the shortest objective lens |
| tube | gives the needed distance between the eyepiece and the objective lenses |
| coarse adjustment knob | moves the stage up and down in large motions (larger knob that is only used in low power) |
| fine adjustment knob | moves the stage up and down slightly (smaller knob used in both low and high power) |
| base | holds up the entire microscope |
| arm | holds the tube and objective lenses; connects to the base of the microscope |
| nosepiece | holds the objective lenses and can be rotated to change the objective |
| light | shines parallel rays into the microscope |
| diaphragm | circular disk below the stage that controls how much light passes through |
| stage | platform for the slide to rest; an opening in its center allows light to pass through |
| aperture | opening in the center of the stage that allows light to pass through |
| stage clips | hold the slide in place on the stage |
| magnify | to make an object appear larger |
| invert | to make an image appear upside down |
| flip | to make the left and right side of the image appear switched |
| convex lens | a lens that is thicker in the middle and thinner on the edges that bends light rays |
| field of view | what you can see when you look into the eyepiece (greater in low power) |
| resolution | the sharpness of an image |
