camouflage any coloring, shape, or pattern that allows an organism to blend in with its environment
population includes all members of a single species in an area at a given time
community includes all living things in an ecosystem
food chain the feeding relationships between organisms in an ecosystem
herbivore animals that eat producers (plants)
carnivore animals that eat other animals (meat)
omnivore animals that eat both plants and other animals
decomposer break down of dead or decaying plant and animal material
prey organisms that are eaten by predators
limiting factor any resource that restricts the growth of populations
carrying capacity the greatest number of individuals within a population that an ecosystem can support
habitat the physical place where an organism lives and hunts for food
niche the special role that an organism plays in an community
mutualism a symbiotic relationship that benefits both organisms
commensalism a symbiotic relationship that benefits one organism without harming another
parasitism a symbiotic relationship where one organism benefits and the other is harmed
adaptation a characteristic that helps an organism to survive in its environment
protective coloration a type of camouflage in which the color of an animals helps it blend in with its background
protective resemblance matching the color, shape, and texture of an environment
mimicry an adaptation in which an animal is protected against predators by its resemblance to an unpleasant animal
