Chapter 2 The Oceans

Water cycle The constant recycling of water on Earth
Evaporation The process in which a liquid changes to a gas
Condensation The process by which water vapor changes from a gas to liquid
Precipitation Water that falls to Earth as rain, snow, sleet, or hail
Wave The up-and-down movement of water
Storm surge A very large series of waves caused by high winds over a large area of ocean
Tide The daily changes in the local water level of the ocean
Deep ocean current An ocean current formed when cold water flows underneath warm water
Surface current An ocean current formed when steady winds blow over the surface of the ocean
Shore zone The place where land and ocean meet
Continental shelf The ocean floor of the shore zone
Abyssal plains Huge flat areas of ocean floor that are covered with thick layers of sediment
Trenches Valleys that form on the ocean floor where two plates come together; the deepest places in the oceans
Mid Ocean Ridge A vast chain of mountains that runs along the centers of Earth's oceans
