| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is the energy of food measured in? | Calories; One calorie = the amount of heat to raise the temp of 1cm of water by 1 c |
| What are the three monosaccharides? | Glucose, Fructose and Galactose (hexose sugers) |
| What is the use of Glucose? | The main sugar used by cells for respiration |
| What are Disaccharides? | Two single sugars join together in a condensation reaction |
| What are the three Disaccharides? | Maltose (glucose+glucose), Sucrose (fructose+glucose) , Lactose (glucose+galactose) |
| What is the use of Maltose? | It is produced when starch is broken down and It's found in germinating seeds |
| What is the use of Sucrose? | The usual form in which sugars are transported around the plant |
| What is Hydrolysis? | The splitting of the glycosidic bond between two sugars. Water is added to the bond and the molecule splits in two. |
| What is a solution to lactose intolerance? | Hydrolyse the lactose in the milk so that the disaccharide Lactose converts into the Monosaccharides Glucose and Galactose |
| What are the tree main Polysaccharides? | starch, cellulose and glycogen |
| What is the use of starch? | The storage carbohydrate in plants and is made up of a mixture of two molecules (amylose and amylopectin) |
| What is the use of Glycogen? | The storage carbohydrate in plants, bacteria and fungi. It has lots of side branches so it can be easily hydrolysed producing lots of energy. |
| What is the use of cellulose? | Its known as a dietary fibre, it's an important function in the movement of material through the digestive tract |
