What is the energy of food measured in? Calories; One calorie = the amount of heat to raise the temp of 1cm of water by 1 c
What are the three monosaccharides? Glucose, Fructose and Galactose (hexose sugers)
What is the use of Glucose? The main sugar used by cells for respiration
What are Disaccharides? Two single sugars join together in a condensation reaction
What are the three Disaccharides? Maltose (glucose+glucose), Sucrose (fructose+glucose) , Lactose (glucose+galactose)
What is the use of Maltose? It is produced when starch is broken down and It's found in germinating seeds
What is the use of Sucrose? The usual form in which sugars are transported around the plant
What is Hydrolysis? The splitting of the glycosidic bond between two sugars. Water is added to the bond and the molecule splits in two.
What is a solution to lactose intolerance? Hydrolyse the lactose in the milk so that the disaccharide Lactose converts into the Monosaccharides Glucose and Galactose
What are the tree main Polysaccharides? starch, cellulose and glycogen
What is the use of starch? The storage carbohydrate in plants and is made up of a mixture of two molecules (amylose and amylopectin)
What is the use of Glycogen? The storage carbohydrate in plants, bacteria and fungi. It has lots of side branches so it can be easily hydrolysed producing lots of energy.
What is the use of cellulose? Its known as a dietary fibre, it's an important function in the movement of material through the digestive tract
