| Scat | Singing/improvising nonsense syllables |

| Motive | A small group of notes/rhythms that become building blocks of a larger piece |
| Madrigal | A cappella, choral, polyphonic, secular |
| Word-painting | A vocal music device, when a composer uses music to mimic or portray something in the lyrics |
| Melisma | Multiple notes on one syllable (voice) |
| Through-composed form | Has no major sections that repeat |
| Lied/Lieder | Song, German art song |
| Art song | Piece for voice and piano, intended for trained musicians |
| Opera | A play set to music |
| Gesamtkunstwerk | Total artwork (Wagner's term) |
| Recitative | Speech, free rhythm, action, little orchestra |
| Aria | Pulse, emotion, full orchestra, melody |
| Virtuosity | ability of fine a player to play difficult music |
| Concerto | multi-movement piece for solo instruments and orchestra |
| Cadenza | Part toward the end of a movement where the orchestra stops and the soloist goes off |
| 12-bar blues | I chord for four measures, IV cord for two measures, I chord again for two measures, V chord, (IV chord), I chord, (V chord) |
