digestive System

TermDefinition
Digestion Process by which foods are changed into usable forms. large pieces are broken down into smaller pieces
Peristalsis food moves through the digestive tract by wavelike movements of muscles
Physical Digestion (Physical = Mechanical) breaking of large pieces of food into smaller pieces of food. Teeth cut, tear, grind, & grind food
Chemical Digestion process by which large food molecules are broken down into smaller molecules. Begins in mouth w/ saliva - enzymes
Enzymes proteins that control chemical reactions - help digest food - each enzyme can only breakdown 1 specific type of food molecule
Mouth Chemical & physical (mechanical digestion)
Stomach J - shaped bag like organ - stores food, breaks down food - mechanical/ chemical digestion
gastric juices contain HCL(kills bacteria & breaks down food), mucus(protects stomach wall), pepsin (makes food soft, only works w/HCL)
Chyme thick liquid in stomach that is ready to be further digested in intestines
Small Intestine long coiled tube, food moves through by peristalsis - most chemical digestion happens here (fats are digested only here)
Pancreas releases digestive juices that changes starches, proteins, & fats into simpler forms
Liver produces bile - green liquid - breaks down large drops of fat into smaller ones.
Absorption in Small Intestine movement of food from digestive system (walls of small intestine - villi) to blood
Absorption Large Intestine minerals & water absorbed into blood
rectum storage of solid waste, elimination of waste

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
