DNA and RNA

QuestionAnswer
Heredity The passing on of characteristics/traits from one generation to the next.
Gene A short region of a chromosome that contains a code for the production of a protein
Gene expression The process by which the code in DNA is used to make a protein
Coding DNA The stretch of DNA where a gene is located. It is called so because it contains the code for the production of a protein
What is the function of non-coding DNA? They turn genes on and off
What is a chromosome? A highly coiled structure composed of a very long molecule of DNA and many millions of separate molecules of protein
What are the proteins associated with DNA called? Give their function Histones - They stabilise the DNA and keep it organised
Name the two types of nucleic acids Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and Ribonucleic acid (RNA)
How many nitrogenous based are found in DNA? Name them 4 - Adenine (A), Thymine (t), Cytosine (C)and Guanine (G).
How the the four bases present in DNA pair? Adenine pairs with Thymine and Cytosine pairs with Guanine
Is DNA double or single-stranded? Double-stranded
What are the two strands of DNA composed of? Phosphates and sugar molecules.
What group of biomolecules do adenine and guanine belong? Purines
What group of biomolecules do thymine and cytosine belong? Pyrimidines
DNA Profiling A method of producing a unique pattern of bands from the DNA of a person so that it can be used for identification purposes
What are the four steps involved in DNA profiling? DNA isolation, Cutting, Separation and Pattern Analysis
The enzyme that cuts DNA is calle what? Restriction Enzyme
Genetic screening A test of a person's DNA to see if an alterd/mutated gene is present
What are ribosomes composed of? RNA
Where is RNA made? RNA is made in the nucleus using the code DNA.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
