Competition

QuestionAnswer
Community Ecology interaction between different species
Competition VS. Predation Competition: both organism are competing for the same resources not benefiting either. Predation: One species benefits while the other does not
What will be discussed in Community Ecology? Competition, Predation, Mutualism
Competition the decrease in population growth rate caused by the limit in resources by another organism
Competition only occurs when ____. Resources are limited
Is Oxygen a limited supply? NO
DO we compete over Oxygen? NO
What is not competition? When you are sharing resources
Resources that species may be competing over Food, Shelter, Light, Mates, Nutrients, Water, Space
Intraspecific Competition Occurs between the memebers of the same species
Interspecific Competition Occurs between the members of different species
Intra means Within
Inter means Out
Intraspecific Competition leads to what? The slowing of the population growth rate when it reaches carrying capacity
At low densities the yeast population grows at a ____ rate. High
At high densities, the yeast population... Slows down and levels off
How can we detect competition in a lab? Grow 2 species together and alone. Use two single-celled organisms
When they grow in different flasks is there any competition? No
When they grown together in the same flask, is there competition? Yes. Population begin to get smaller when they are together whether than alone
How can we detect competition in the field? Compare behavior, growth of an individual, and population growth alone and with another species
Comparing behavior Example Yellow Rumped Warble suffers competition with the Black-thoarted Green Warbler because they move their feeding zone upward.
What experiment can explain the growth of an individual? Measure 2 Desmodium (wild flower) alone, together with other plants of its species, and together with plants of other species
What 2 Desmodium was measured D. glutinosum and D. nudflorium
D. glutinosum decreased in leaf growth drastically by Intraspecific Competition
D. nudflorium decreased in leaf growth drastically by Interspecific competition
Result Competition reduces leaf growth in both species
Another example of how can we detect competition in the field Kangaroo rat VS. Small seed eater
Where do these species coexist? Arizona desert
Do they compete? Yes
Explain the K-rats and Small seed eaters experiment If the K-rats are present, the small seed eaters population growth rate decreases. When the K-rats are taken out, Small seed eaters population increases drastically.
What about the insect eaters? Does the insect eaters and K-rats compete? No because they have didn't resources for nutrients
How did the gather these results? Ideas? Fenced a plot / Planted AL fencing so they couldn't dig / Cut holes in the fence so small rodents could enter except K-rats / tapped, counted, marked
What else can alter the outcome of the competition? Physical environment and biological environment
Evolutionary effect of the competition Ex) body size and seed size Small ground finches eat small seeds / Medium ground finches eat medium seeds
Is the ground finches example a Intra- or Inter- competition? Interspecfic Competition
Conclusion of evolutionary effect Overtime the competitive relationships between species will evolve (ground finches evolve beaks sizes)
