| hormones | turn on, turn off, speed up, or slow down the activities of different organs and tissues |
| target cells | cells that recognize the hormone's chemical structure |
| hypothalamus | sends nerve messages, produces hormones, and helps to maintain homeostasis |
| pituitary gland | communicates with the hypothalamus to control many body activities |
| thyroid gland | controls the release of energy from food molecules during respiration |
| adrenal glands | trigger the body to respond to emergencies |
| ovaries | control changes in a teenage girl's body |
| testes | control changes in a teenage boy's body |
| pancreas | produces insulin and glucagon |
