Vocab ARCC Bio Ch11

TermDefinition
Cell Cycle The events that occur from the time a cell forms until the time it divides
Interphase A phase during a cell's life where it: enlarges doubles number of its cytoplasmic components and replicates DNA
Mitosis A nuclear division mechanism that maintains chromosome number. Basis of body growth in tissue repair in multicelled eukaryotes, also asexual reproduction in some plants, animals and fungi
asexual reproduction reproductive mode where offspring come from one parent only
homologous chromosomes chromosomes with the same length, shape and set of genes.
anaphase Mitosis- Stage where sister chromatids separate and move to opposite spindle poles
Metaphase Mitosis- Stage where the cell's chromosomes are aligned midway between poles and spindle
prophase Mitosis- Stage where chromosomes condense and become attached to a newly forming spindle
spindle Dynamically assembled and disassembled network of micro tubules that moves chromosomes during nuclear division
telophase Mitosis- Stage where chromosomes arrive at the spindle poles and decondense, and new nuclei form
Cytokinesis Cytoplasmic Division
Cleavage furrow in a dividing animal cell, the indentation where cytoplasmic division will occur
cell plate after nuclear division in a plant cell, a disk shaped structure that forms a cross-wall between the two new nuclei
telomere noncoding, repetitive DNA sequence at the end of chromosomes; protecting the coding sequences from degration
growth factor molecule that stimulates mitosis and differentiation
metastasis the process in which cancer cells spread from one part of the body to another
neoplasm an accumulation of abnormally dividing cells
oncogene gene that helps transform a normal cell into a tumor cell
proto-oncogene gene that, by mutation, can become an oncogene
tumor a neoplasm that forms a lump

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
