Terms associated with Earth Science maps.

| globe | 3-d model of Earth |
| Mercator | projection that distorts polar regions |
| equator | 0° latitude line |
| meridian | any line that divides Earth in half vertically |
| Prime Meridian | divides Earth into eastern and western hemispheres |
| lines of latitude | horizontal lines on map that show location north or south of equator |
| lines of longitude | vertical lines on map that show location east or west of prime meridian |
| projection | any 2-d map of Earth's 3-d surface |
| northern hemisphere | Earth's half containing the US, Europe, and Asia |
| southern hemisphere | Earth's half containing Antarctica |
| western hemisphere | Earth's half containing North and South America |
| eastern hemisphere | Earth's half containing most of Africa, Asia, and Australia |
| Atlantic Ocean | ocean off the east coast of North and South America |
| Pacific Ocean | ocean off the west coast of North and South America |
| Indian Ocean | ocean off the east coast of Africa |
| Arctic Ocean | ocean located in the north polar regions |
| Australia | the smallest continent |
| Asia | the largest continent |
| topographic map | map that shows elevation of Earth's surface |
| contour line | shows specific elevations on a topographic map |
| Index Contour | the darker shaded lines on a topographic map usually labeled with numbers (often every 5th line) |
| Contour Interval | elevation difference between two lines on a topographic map |
| gradient | the steepness on a topographic map |
| depression/sinkhole | area on a topographic map indicated by 'hatchered' contour lines |
| upstream | direction V-shaped contour lines point |
| hill/mountain | surface feature represented on a topographic map by circles inside circles |
| scale | on a map, the ratio of measured map distance to actual distance on Earth's surface |
| degree | the unit for measuring displacement from the equator or P.M. on a map |
| contour profile | shows the sideways view of a path across a topographic map |
| (total) relief | difference in elevation between highest and lowest points on a topographic map |
| zero | elevation of mean sea level (in feet) |
| Greenwich | city in England through which the Prime Meridian passes |
| steep | describes the slope gradient when contour lines are closely spaced |
| legend/key | explains the meaning of symbols on a map |
| compass rose | shows the 4 (cardinal) directions of N, S, E, and W on a map |
| map scale | shows the amount that distance on a map represents actual distance |
| ex: 1:25,000 | fractional scale |
| ex: 1 in = 10 miles | verbal scale |
| ex: 0|<–––––|–––––>|1 mile | graphical scale |
| G.I.S. | Geographic Information System with multiple data bases ('layers') of information |
| G.P.S. | (Global Positioning System) a system that needs information from 3 satellites to locate an object, a 4th satellite to identify elevation |
| O.S.T.M. | (Ocean Surface Topography Mission) satellite that maps the ocean's surface with sonar |
| Landsat | satellite the maps land surfaces using reflected visible and infrared lights |
| SeaBeam | (ship that) uses sonar to map the ocean floor |
