Biology II Chapter 21 Divisions

Bryophyta Mosses; Have structures similar to leaves, have rootlike, multicellular rhizoids that anchor them to the soil & help them move water/nutrients around.
Anthocerophyta Hornworts; Use osmosis/diffusion to transfer nutrients; Has 1 large chloroplast in ea. cell of the gameo/sporophyte; Has spaces around the cells filled w. "mucilage" or slime.
Hepaticophyta Liverworts; Found in a variety of habitats; Nutrients are transported by osmosis/diffusion. Sub-divided into leafy & thallose liverworts.
Lycophyta Club Mosses; Sporophyte generation is dominant; Have reproductive structures that produce spores that club/spike-shaped; Have roots, stems, and small leaf like structures.
Pterophyta Ferns; Includes ferns and horsetails; Has an underground stem called a rhizome that stores food; The "frond" or the leaf of the plant is a sporophyte; The spores produce a structure called a sporangium and the sporangium produce a structure called a sorus
Cycandophyta Cycads; Cones contain male/female repro. structures; Evolved before plants with flowers; Usually found in tropics/subtropics
Gnetophyta Gnetophytes; Can live up to 1500-2000 years; Have 3 genera of gnetophytes; Ephedrine is found in gnetophytes
Ginkgophyta Ginkgos; Only has one living species; Has small, fan-shaped leaves; Male/Female repro. systems are on separate plants.
Coniferophyta Conifer; Repro. structures of most conifers develop in cones; Male/Female cones on different branches; Waxlike coating called cutin
Anthophyta Angiosperms; First appeared in the fossil record about 130 million years ago; Botanists classify anthophytes as monocots, dicots, or eudicots
