Ch. 7 test review

QuestionAnswer
what is: 1. every living organism is composed of at least one cell 2. Cells are the basic structure unit and function 3. Cells come only from reproductino of existing cells cell theory
first scientist to observe cells in a piece of cork. Named them "cells" since they looked like rooms monks lived in Robert Hooke
created microscope lenses with greater magnification power. Was the first scientist to observe living cells Andrew Van Leuwenhook
created the first compound microscope Zaccharias Jansen
zoologist who determined that all animals are made from cells Theodor Schwann
botanist who determined that all plants are made from cells Matthias Schleiden
physician who determined that all cells must come from other cells. Rudolf Virchow
i. A theory that has been disproved which states that living organisms can come to life from nonliving materials Spontaneous Generation
Explain ALL PARTS of the experiment that disproved the theory of spontaneous generation i. One jar was fully sealed 1. Only has flies on top ii. The other with gauze 1. Had flies on top but maggot eggs inside iii. And one with nothing 1. Has flies on top and inside and maggot eggs inside
i. A cell membrane ii. Cytoplasm iii. DNA three cellular parts that ALL cells share in common.
differences between prokaryotic cells and eukaryotic cells eukaryotes- advanced larger hold linear dna
prokaryotic organism bacteria
four kingdoms in Domain Eukarya Animalia Plantae Fungi Protista
Example Kingdom Protista amoeba
Example Kingdom Fungi mold
Example Kingdom Plantae Roses
Example Kingdom Animalia bird
how a cell’s shape and its function are related i. Red blood cells, (which are “caved in”) transport oxygen to the body. This shape helps with the function because it can hold more oxygen thus allowing a bigger oxygen flow which you need to survive.
c. Describe how the disease sickle cell anemia reduces a cell’s ability to function efficiently i. Sickle cell anemia reduces the cell’s ability because the shape is off and can’t hold much oxygen. Then because of the edges it can cause clotting and can be extremely painful for a person.
Identify the two measurements that limit cell size. 1/500th the size of a period and 6 1/2 feet long
b. Explain the problem cells would encounter if they were not generally small in size. i. The big cell wouldn’t be able to hold as much stuff, but the small cell can only hold a little but go through the entire cell faster
It’s a SUBUNIT within a cell that performs a specific function macromolecules make this up Define cell organelle.
Explain why it is beneficial for a cell to have organelles. i. Because the organelle does a specific function and without them they would have a ton of things not knowing what to do
Explain the process of endosymbiosis in your own words. i. That they were once bacterial cells ii. The theory describes how a large cell ingests bacteria and they become dependent on one another in their survival
