Groundwater

Master the vocab related to water beneath the surface!

TermDefinition
aquifer a body of rock or sediment that stores groundwater and allows the flow of groundwater
porosity the percentage of the total volume of a rock or sediment that consists of open spaces
permeability the ability of a rock or sediment to let fluids pass through its open spaces, or pores
water table the upper surface of the zone of saturation
zone of aeration the zone that lies between Earth's surface and the water table; not filled with water
zone of saturation the layer of an aquifer in which the pore spaces are completely filled with water
soil moisture region uppermost region of the zone of aeration; contains moisture for plant roots
capillary fringe bottom region of the zone of aeration; water pulled up through spaces due to attraction between water molecules and other materials
perched water table a second water table that sits on an impermeable rock layer above the main water table
recharge zone any place where water from the surface can go back into an aquifer; includes storm drains and abandoned wells
well a hole that is dug below the water table
spring a natural flow of groundwater to the surface in places where the ground dips below the water table
artesian formation a sloping layer of permeable rock sandwiched between two impermeable layers; gravity pushes water downslope and out of a spring or well
hot springs hot groundwater that is at least 37 degrees Celsius and rises to the surface
geyser a hot spring that periodically erupts
