| proper nouns | Names of places and people. e.g. Albany, Ella, Sarah |
| adjective | describing nouns e.g. DELICIOUS cake. ANNOYING child |
| adverb | describes a verb e.g. whispered excitedly. last week |
| verb | action words - tense indicates time |
| pronoun | Replaces nouns e.g. She,He they (their person), I, me , my (personal pronouns). you (second person) |
| conjunction | joining words (and, but, or, because) |
| preposition | e.g. at, but, of, on, two, by, in, before, over, behind. Connecting to the subject (the man jumped OVER the dog) |
| interjection | Expresses exclamation. e.g. YAY! HORRAY! |
| antonym | opposites, hot, cold. - in, out - up, down |
| homonym | homo (same), same word different meaning. e.g. here, hear, hair, hare. |
| synonym | same meaning different word. e.g. happy, excited, glad, ecstatic. |
