E. Sci. Ch. 10 & 11

Vocabulary over chapters 10 and 11

TermDefinition
Continental Drift Single large landmass broke up into smaller landmasses to form continents.
Mid-Ocean Ridge Undersea mountain ranges that have steep narrow valleys at it's center.
Sea-Floor Spreading Ocean floor moves away from the ridge, rising magma cools and solidifies to form new rock that replaces the ocean floor.
Alfred Wegener German scientist who proposed the hypothesis of the Continental Drift.
Supercontinent Continents arranged into large landmasses
Plate tectonics Theory that explains how large pieces of the lithosphere move and change shape
Lithosphere Solid outer layer of the Earth that consists of the crust and the rigid upper part of the mantle.
Asthenosphere Solid plastic layer of the mantle beneath the lithosphere
Divergent Boundary Boundary between two tectonic plates that are moving away from each other
Convergent Boundary Boundary between tectonic plates that are colliding
Transform Boundary Boundary between tectonic plates that are sliding past each other horizontally
Tectonic Plates Blocks that move
Oceanic Crust Dense and made of rock that is rich in iron & magnesium
Continental Crust Low density and made up of rock that is rich in silica
Earthquake When tectonic plates move, sudden shifts can occur along the boundaries
Volcano Form when plate motions generate magma that erupts on Earth's surface
Rift Valley Narrow valley that forms when the plates separate
Subduct Sinks---under less dense continental lithosphere
Subduction Zone Region along a plate boundary
Convection Movement of heated material due to differences in density that are caused by differences in temperature
Rifting Process by which a continent breaks apart
Pangaea Supercontinent formed 300 million years ago & began to break up 200 million years ago.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
