Cycles

Water, Nitrogen, Oxygen and Carbon Cycles (Ch 20)

TermDefinition
Evaporation Process where water changes from a liquid to a gas
Condensation Process where water vapor changes to liquid water.
Transpiration Process where some water in plants evaporates into the atmosphere
Precipitation Water falls from clouds to the Earth's surface
Sunlight Supplies energy for the water cycle
Precipitation The process that would come after water has condensed and formed clouds
Nitrogen Fixation The process of nitrogen changing from a gas into a usable compound
Bacteria Breaks down nitrogen gas in the soil into compounds that organisms can use
Plants Animals get nitrogen they need by eating this
Photosynthesis The main source of oxygen in Earth's Atmosphere
Phytoplankton Provides more than 50% of the oxygen in the Earth's atmosphere
Greenhouse effect process through which thermal energy from the sun is absorbed and keeps the Earth warm
Condensation The process that is represented by the formation of dew on the ground
97% The percentage of water in oceans
Decomposition The process dead organisms go through when they release carbon and nitrogen into the soil
Carbon dioxide Keeps the warmth from the sun from quickly radiating back into space
Combustion The process where fossil fuels are burned and carbon is released into the atmosphere
Fossil Fuels Coal, oil, and natural gas are...
Photosynthesis The process when plants take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen
Cellular respiration The process when animals take oxygen out of the atmosphere and release carbon dioxide.
Releases Water releases or absorbs carbon dioxide

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
