TermDefinition
energy the ability to do work energy
joules energy is measured in joules
power power is the rate at which energy is transferred from one object to another
energy transformation is when there is a change from one energy to another `
law of conservation of energy energy can not be created or destroyed it can only be converted from one form to another. Example: when you rub your hands together you are converting mechanical energy( movement) to thermal energy( heat).
Kinetic energy energy of motion
kinetic energy increases as both mass and velocity increases
Examples of kinetic energy a rock falling off a cliff and a person jumping into the pool from a diving board
potential energy energy of position, stored energy
gravitational potential energy depends on the height of an object and Example: standing at the top of a diving board
Elastic potential energy is potential energy of an elastic object that is under tension or compression and Example: Pulling back a bow
Nonrenewable Energy Sources: when an energy source can not be replaced in your lifetime it is considered nonrenewable
fossil fuels the three major fossil fuels are oil, coal, and natural gas and the most plentiful fossil fuel in the United States is coal and the most plentiful fossil fuel in Arkansas is natural gas which produces the lowest levels of air pollutants
nuclear energy/ nuclear fission splitting an atom's nuclear into two small nuclei and 1. water is changed into stem in a nuclear power plant from heat released from nuclear fission reactions
nuclear fusion: combining two atomic nuclei to produce one larger nucleus. Nuclear Fission: Splitting atoms * Both produce heat or thermal energy
Renewable Energy Sources: will never run out, it is sustainable
Energy Conservation reducing energy use and Example: Choosing CFL bulbs over incandescent bulbs.
Energy Efficiency is the percentage of energy that is actually used to perform work.
Types of Renewable Energy Sources solar energy, wind energy, Hydroelectric power, Biomass, Geothermal Energy.
solar energy: solar energy generates heat and electricity from the sun directly or using Photovoltaic cells
wind energy: converts kinetic energy into electricity using windmills with large blades that require 11- 13 mile per hour winds on average to operate and generate electricity. This energy source is indirectly a form of solar energy, because without the sun we would no
Hydroelectric Power: hydroeletric power creating dams in running water to capture the kinetic energy as it moves. 1. This is the most common renewable resource used today.
Biomass is using waste products to produce energy. and biomass 1. Examples: wood, gasohol, biofuel, corn.
Geothermal Energy: The intense heat from the Earth's interior that warms the magma beneath Earth's surface. geothermal energy

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
