MFD-Biology

Chapter 1

TermDefinition
biology the scientific study of living organisms and their interactions with the environment
organization the high degree of order within an organism’s internal and external parts and in its interactions with the living world
cell in biology, the smallest unit that can perform all life processes; cells are covered by a membrane and contain DNA and cytoplasm
unicellular describes an organism that consists of a single cell
multicellular describes a tissue, organ, or organism that is made of many cells
organ a collection of tissues that carry out a specialized function of the body
tissue a group of similar cells that perform a common function a group of similar cells that perform a common function
organelle one of the small bodies that are found in the cytoplasm of a cell and that are specialized to perform a specific function
biological molecule chemical compound that provides physical structure and brings about movement, energy use, and other cellular functions
homeostasis the maintenance of a constant internal state in a changing environment; a constant internal state that is maintained in a changing environment by continually making adjustments to the internal and external environment
metabolism the sum of all chemical processes that occur in an organism
cell division the formation of two cells from one existing cell
development the process by which an organism grows
reproduction the process of producing offspring
gene the most basic physical unit of heredity; a segment of nucleic acids that codes for a functional unit of RNA and/or a protein
Biology is the study of all living things. Branches of biology include •botany, which is the study of plants •zoology, which is the study of animals •ecology, which is the study of the interactions between organisms
Living organisms can be discussed in terms of the following: •cell structure and function •strategies for maintaining homeostasis •reproduction and heredity •evolution •interdependence of organisms •need for energy
Organism An organism is a living thing. Some organisms are composed of a single cell. Other organisms are composed of many cells.
Comparing Organisms That Are Unicellular and Multicellular A unicellular organism is a living thing composed of one cell. A multicellular organism is a living thing composed of more than one cell.
DNA Overview DNA, or deoxyribonucleic acid, is the material that contains the information that determines inherited characteristics. The nucleotides that make up DNA are composed of a nitrogen base, a phosphate group, and a sugar.
Gene A gene is a segment of DNA that is located in a chromosome and that codes for a specific hereditary trait.
Sexual Reproduction Reproduction is the process by which new offspring are produced. In sexual reproduction the genetic material from more than one parent combine to produce offspring.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
