Weather, Erosion, and Soil

TermDefinition
Weathering any process that breaks down and changes rocks
Chemical Weathering process by which rock are changed in their composition due to chemical reactions
Frost Wedging type of mechanical weathering that occurs when water freezes and thaws in the cracks of rocks, resulting in rocks splitting.
Mechanical Weathering process that breaks down rocks without changing their composition
Acid Precipitation rain with a pH under 5 that can cause chemical weathering
Erosion removal and trasport of weathered material to another location
Deposition when eroded materials and dropped in another location
Soil loose covering of weathered rock and decayed organic material covering the underlying bedrock
Residual Soil soil that comes from parent material that is similar to the area's bedrock
Transported Soil soil that has been moved away from its parent material
Soil Profile vertical sequence of soil layers
Soil Horizon specific layer within the soil profile
