Monomer A small molecule that bonds together many times to form a large string like molecule (polymer)
Polymer A large molecule made of many small monomers
Monosaccharide One sugar molecule (ex. glucose or fructose). The main component of carbohydrates.
Disaccharide Two sugar molecules bonded together (ex. glucose and fructose)
Polysaccharides Many sugar molecules bonded together (ex. starch or glycogen.
Carbohydrates A molecule made out of sugar (ex. monosaccharides, disaccharides, and polysaccharides)
Amino Acid A molecule that is the monomer of proteins.
Protein A large molecule made out of many amino acid molecules bonded together.
Lipids A type of fat. It is a large molecule made up of glycerol and three fatty acids (triglyceride)
Macromolecule A large molecule (ex. proteins, lipids, carbohydrates)
Enzyme A type of protein that causes a reaction to occur quickly because it lowers the activation energy of a reaction.
Activation Energy The energy required for a reaction to take place
The main function of a carbohydrates Energy for our cells
The main functions of lipids Thermal insulation, source for biofuel, makes up cell membranes, cushion organs, long term energy
The main functions of proteins structure, enzymes, immune system, muscles
