Catch a Wave 1

Catch a Wave List 1

TermDefinition
Energy Ability to cause changes in matter
Wave A disturbance or vibration of a medium that moves through the medium
Electromagnetic Wave Transverse wave consisting of vibrating electric and magnetic fields that can travel across space
Mechanical/Physical Wave A disturbance in matter that transfers energy from place to place; starts when matter is disturbed
Vibration Rapid back and forth movements
Medium Materials (series of interconnected particles) through which a wave travels
Light Electromagnetic radiation that can be perceived by the human eye
Sound Transfer of energy from a vibrating object in longitudinal waves that travel through matter.
Earthquake/Seismic A sudden movement of the Earth's lithosphere (its crust and upper mantle).
Longitudinal Wave Wave in which particles of the medium vibrate in the same direction that the wave travels.
Transverse Wave Wave in which particles of the medium vibrate at right angles to the direction that the wave travels
Wavelength Wavelength can be measured as the distance between two adjacent crests of a transverse wave or two adjacent compressions of a longitudinal wave
Trough The lowest point of a transverse wave
Crest The highest point of a transverse wave
Amplitude The maximum distance the particles of a medium move from their resting position
Frequency The number of waves that pass a fixed point in a given amount of time; measured in hertz (Hz)
Compression The densest part of a longitudinal wave; force that tends to shorten or squeeze something, decreasing its volume.
Rarefaction The part of a longitudinal wave that is more spread out; a decrease in density and pressure in a medium, such as air, especially when caused by the passage of a wave

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
