Notes on how the microscope functions

Are the Base and the Arm connected? | Yes,usually is one single piece of cast metal |
What is the purpose of the Arm? | It is the correct place to grip when carrying a microscope |
What is the purpose of the Base? | When carrying a microscope,you want to support the base with the palm of your hand |
What is the Stage? | It is the platform that supports the specimen so it can be observed. |
Why does the Stage have a hole in the center? | It has a hole in the center to allow light to pass through, so the specimen must be supported on a microscope slide |
What purpose does the Diaphragm have? | It controls how much light goes through the specimen when you adjust it |
What is the Diaphragm's range? | It has a range from 1 to 5 |
What do Stage Clips do? | It holds down the slide so it will stay in place |
What purpose does the Mirror serve? | It is the light source. Never use in direct sunlight because it will damage your eyes |
What is the Scanning Objective Lens power? | 4x |
What is the Low Power Objective lens power? | 10x |
What is the High Power Objective Lens power? | 40x |
Which Objective Lens is the shortest out of the 3? | The Scanning Power Objective Lens |
What purpose does the Body Tube serve? | It allows light from the objective to pass upward to form the first magnified image |
What does the Eyepiece do? | It has the Ocular lens and the eyepiece is usually 10x |
How do you switch objectives? | You rotate the Nose Piece |
What does the Coarse Adjustment Knob do? | You use it primarily to focus on your specimen |
What does the Fine Adjustment Knob do? | It is used for minute focusing. You use this after you have focused with the coarse adjustment knob |
Why should you never use your Coarse Adjustment Knob on high power? | It will crack your slide |
