ecosystems

TermDefinition
organism Any individual living thing.
ecosystem All the living and nonliving things in an area that interact with each other.
biotic All of the living parts of an ecosystem. (plants, animals, and bacteria)
abiotic All of the nonliving parts of an ecosystem. (rain, sunlight, temperature)
consumer An organism that eats other living things to get energy;  an organism that does not produce its own food.
producer An organism that makes its own food; an organism that does not consume other plants or animals.
decomposer Organisms which carry out the process of decomposition by breaking down dead or decaying organisms.
community A group of different populations that live together and interact in an  environment.
population A group of organisms of the same species that share a habitat and can breed with each other. (All the raccoons, all the pine trees, all the bunnies)
habitat The location in which an organism lives. (where the raccoons live)
