TermDefinition
Unicellular An organism that consists of one cell
Structure the arrangement of parts in an organism
Chloroplasts found only in plant and algae cells, this green organelle uses sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water to make sugar
Prokaryote an organism that consists of a single cell that does not have a nucleus
Vacuole this organelle stores water and other materials
Organism a living thing; anything that can carry out life processes independently
Cell the smallest unit that can perform all live processes
Organelle one of the small bodies in a cell’s cytoplasm that are specialized to perform a specific function.
ATP adenosine triphosphate is the substance where energy released by mitochondria is stored
Cell Membrane acts as a barrier between the inside of a cell and the cell’s environment
Nucleus the Brain of the cell and has DNA
Golgi Complex – helps make and package materials to be transported out of the cell
Ribosome cell organelle composed of RNA and protein, the site of protein synthesis
Vesicle a small cavity or sac that contains materials to be moved in or out of a eukaryotic cell
Nucleolus located in the nucleus, this organelle stores material used to make ribosomes
DNA deoxyribonucleic acid, the cell’s genetic material that contains the information on how to make a cell’s proteins
Cell Theory – Three parts: 1.All organisms are made of one or more cells 2.The cell is the basic unit of all living things. 3.All cells come from existing cells.
Function the special, normal, or proper activity of an organ or part
Cytoskeleton acts as both muscle and skeleton to keep the cell’s membrane from collapsing
Eukaryote organism made up of cells that have a nucleus enclosed by a membrane; for example animals, plants, and fungi
Tissue a group of similar cells that perform a common function
Lysosome cell organelle that contains digestive enzymes
Flagellum tail like structure on some bacteria that help the bacteria move
Lipids do not dissolve in water and includes fats and cholesterol in the cell membrane
Multicellular organism made of many cells; benefits include larger size, longer life, and cell specialization
Bacteria most common prokaryote and are the world’s smallest cells
Hooke and Leeuwenhoek used microscopes to look at cells and discovered that organisms were made of cells
Cell Wall a rigid structure that surrounds the cell membrane and provides support to plant and fungi cells
Mitochondria has two membranes and is where sugar is broken down to produce energy
Endoplasmic Reticulum a system of folded membranes in which proteins, lipids, and other materials are made and is the internal delivery system of the cells having many tubes and passageways
Organ System a group of organs that work together to perform body functions
Organ a collection of tissues that carry out a specialized function of the body

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
