Igneous Rocks

| igneous rock | rock that is formed from the melting and solidification of lava or magma |
| volcano | an opening in the Earth's crust from which molten lava flows |
| lava | molten rock that is extruded from a volcano |
| magma | molten rock that is within the Earth's interior |
| melting | when a substance goes from a solid to a liquid with the addition of heat |
| solidification | when a substance goes from a liquid to a solid as heat is given off |
| molten | melted (as in rock) |
| extrusive | igneous rock that cools on the surface of the Earth after having been ejected from a volcano |
| intrusive | igneous rock formed when magma cools inside of the Earth |
| glassy texture | the texture that is the result of cooling that was so fast that no crystals could form |
| fine texture | the texture that is the result of quick cooling where small crystals are formed |
| vesicular texture | holey texture that results from gas bubbles escaping during the cooling process |
| mafic | composed of magnesium and iron resulting in dark-colored, high density igneous rocks |
| felsic | composed of aluminum and silicon resulting in light-colored, low density igneous rocks |
| abundant | to have a lot of something |
| composition | what something is made out of |
