7th Weather Part 2
Vocabulary cards for weather unit
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Air mass | a body of air with horizontally uniform temperature, humidity, and pressure. |
| High Pressure | a condition of the atmosphere in which the pressure is above average (e.g., in an anticyclone). |
| Low pressure | a condition of the atmosphere in which the pressure is below average (e.g., in a depression). "areas of low pressure almost always bring rain" |
| Frontal boundaries | a narrow transition zone between air masses with differing densities |
| Thunderstorms | A transient, sometimes violent storm of thunder and lightning, often accompanied by rain and sometimes hail. |
| hurricanes | a tropical storm with winds that have reached a constant speed of 74 miles per hour or more. The eye of a storm is usually 20-30 miles wide and may extend over 400 miles. The dangers of a storm include torrential rains, high winds and storm surges. |
| Tornadoes | a mobile, destructive vortex of violently rotating winds having the appearance of a funnel-shaped cloud and advancing beneath a large storm system. |
| Weather conditions | the atmospheric conditions that comprise the state of the atmosphere in terms of temperature and wind and clouds and precipitation; |
| wind speed | how fast the wind is moving at a given location |
| temperature | it is a measure of the average translational kinetic energy associated with the disordered microscopic motion of atoms and molecules. |
| humidity | amount of water vapor in the air |
| air pressure | force of air upon an object |
| weather maps | a map that shows current weather conditions and projected changes in weather |
| satellites | a moon, planet or machine that orbits a planet or star |
| radar | an object detection system which uses radio waves to determine the range, altitude, direction, or speed of objects |
| stratus | uniform grayish clouds that often cover the entire sky. They resemble fog that does not reach the ground |
| cumulus | a genus-type of low-level cloud that can have noticeable vertical development and clearly defined edges. Cumulo- means "heap" or "pile" in Latin |
| nimbus | the very dark storm clouds that have precipitation. These clouds are typically present in different forms to form thunderstorms. |
| cirrus | thin, wispy clouds blown by high winds into long streamers. They are considered "high clouds" forming above 6000 m (20,000 ft) |
| alto | high |
