7th Weather Part 2

Vocabulary cards for weather unit

TermDefinition
Air mass a body of air with horizontally uniform temperature, humidity, and pressure.
High Pressure a condition of the atmosphere in which the pressure is above average (e.g., in an anticyclone).
Low pressure a condition of the atmosphere in which the pressure is below average (e.g., in a depression). "areas of low pressure almost always bring rain"
Frontal boundaries a narrow transition zone between air masses with differing densities
Thunderstorms A transient, sometimes violent storm of thunder and lightning, often accompanied by rain and sometimes hail.
hurricanes a tropical storm with winds that have reached a constant speed of 74 miles per hour or more. The eye of a storm is usually 20-30 miles wide and may extend over 400 miles. The dangers of a storm include torrential rains, high winds and storm surges.
Tornadoes a mobile, destructive vortex of violently rotating winds having the appearance of a funnel-shaped cloud and advancing beneath a large storm system.
Weather conditions the atmospheric conditions that comprise the state of the atmosphere in terms of temperature and wind and clouds and precipitation;
wind speed how fast the wind is moving at a given location
temperature it is a measure of the average translational kinetic energy associated with the disordered microscopic motion of atoms and molecules.
humidity amount of water vapor in the air
air pressure force of air upon an object
weather maps a map that shows current weather conditions and projected changes in weather
satellites a moon, planet or machine that orbits a planet or star
radar an object detection system which uses radio waves to determine the range, altitude, direction, or speed of objects
stratus uniform grayish clouds that often cover the entire sky. They resemble fog that does not reach the ground
cumulus a genus-type of low-level cloud that can have noticeable vertical development and clearly defined edges. Cumulo- means "heap" or "pile" in Latin
nimbus the very dark storm clouds that have precipitation. These clouds are typically present in different forms to form thunderstorms.
cirrus thin, wispy clouds blown by high winds into long streamers. They are considered "high clouds" forming above 6000 m (20,000 ft)
