NC 7th Atmosphere
7th grade Key vocabulary about the atmosphere
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Atmosphere | the envelope of gases surrounding the earth or another planet. |
| Troposphere | the lowest region of the atmosphere, extending from the earth's surface to a height of about 3.7–6.2 miles (6–10 km), where most of the weather occurs, temperature decreases with altitude |
| Stratosphere | : the part of the earth's atmosphere which extends from the troposphere to about 30 miles (50 kilometers) above the surface and in which temperature increases gradually to about 32° F (0° C) and clouds rarely form, where the ozone layer is located |
| Mesosphere | the atmospheric layer lying between the stratosphere and the thermosphere, characterized by a rapid decrease in temperature with height, where meteors burn up |
| Thermosphere | the region of the atmosphere above the mesosphere and below the height at which the atmosphere ceases to have the properties of a continuous medium. The thermosphere is characterized throughout by an increase in temperature with height |
| Exosphere | The outermost layer of the earth's atmosphere, lying above the thermosphere and extending thousands of kilometers into space, from which molecules having sufficient velocity can escape the earth's gravitation. |
| Ionosphere | the layer of the earth's atmosphere that contains a high concentration of ions and free electrons and is able to reflect radio wave |
| Altitude | the height of an object or point in relation to sea level or ground level |
| Air pressure | the force per unit of area exerted on the Earth's surface by the weight of the air above the surface |
