Cell Structure

TermDefinition
Cell Membrane the outer membrane of a cell. Has a fluid mosaic structure regulating the movement of materials across it.
Cell Wall supportive structure outside the cell membrane in some cells. Plant Cells have a cells wall, but Animal Cells do not.
Cellular Respiration metabolic pathway. Carbon compounds are taken apart and the released bond energies are retained by high- energy phosphate bond of ATP.
Chloroplast eukaryotic organelle that contains chlorophyll. The chlorophyll is located in complex membranous structures inside the chloroplasts
Chromatin Chromatin is one chromosome.Replication occurs when it is a chromatin
Chromosome contains DNA and small proteins called histones.
Cristae shelf-like folds of the inner membrane of a mitochondrion. Contains enzyme complexes that conduct many of the reactions of cellular respiration
Cytoplasm watery fluid within a cells plasma membrane in which organelles are suspended
Cytoskeleton internal framework of a cell, which consists of protein filaments and stands. some functions are to maintain cell shape, others allow shape to alter
Golgi Bodies a netlike structure in the cytoplasm of animal cells (especially in those cells that produce secretions)
Lysosome An organelle in the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells containing degradative enzymes enclosed in a membrane
matrix Ground substance in which things are embedded of that fills a space.
Mitochondria An organelle found in large numbers in most cells, in which biochemical processes of respiration and energy production occur
Nuclear envelope the double lipid bilayer membrane which surrounds the genetic material and nucleolus in eukaryotic cells
Nuclear pore Large protein complexes that cross the nuclear envelope, which is the double membrane surrounding the eukaryotic cell nucleus
Nucleolus small dense spherical structure in the nucleus of a cell during interphase
Nucleus A membrane bound structure that contains the cells hereditary information and controls the cells growth and reproduction. it is commonly the most prominent organelle in the cell
Organelle Any of a number of organized of specialized structures within a living cell
Polysome A cluster of ribosomes held together by a strand of messenger RNA
Ribosome a minute particle consisting of RNA and associated proteins found in large numbers in the cell cytoplasm of living cells
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum studded with ribosomes on the cytosoloicface. sites of protein synthesis. Found in hepatocytes where protein synthesis occurs actively
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum Smooth network without the ribsosomes. concerned with lipid metabolism, carbohydrate metabolism and detoxification
Vacule space of vesicle within the cytoplasm of a cell enclosed by a membrane and typically containing fluid
vesicle bubble-like membranous structure that stores and transports cellular products, and digests metabolic wastes within the cell

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
