Cell Compounds - Water, Acid, Bases, Buffers

QuestionAnswer
acids 1- Any of a class of substances whose aqueous solutions have the ability to react with bases and certain metals to form salts. 2- A substance that can accept a pair of electrons to form a covalent bond
bases molecules that either release hydroxide ions (OH-) or take up hydrogen ions (H+); bases have a pH greater than 7
hemoglobin the oxygen-carrying pigment of red blood cells that gives them their red color and serves to convey oxygen to the tissues
hydrogen bonding weak bond that arises between a slightly positive hydrogen atom of one molecule and a slightly negative atom of another molecule or between parts of the same molecule
hydrophilic water-loving molecules that are polar in nature
hydrophobic water-phobic molecules that are non-polar
lubricant a substance capable of reducing friction by making surfaces smooth or slippery
pH relative strength of an acid
polarity One of the opposite or contrasted parts or directions in which a polar force is manifested
solvent liquid component of a solution
temperature regulaor (blank)
buffer a compound or combination of compounds (often a weak acid or base and a related salt) that keeps the pH of a solution within its normal limits
covalent (covalence) the number of electron pairs that an atom can share with other atoms.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
