MICROORGANISMS

TermDefinition
TAXONOMIC GROUPS Levels used in the classification of organisms
SPECIES Two individuals belong to the same ------------- when they can reproduce together and have fertile descendants
SCIENTIFIC NAME Name for species othat uses two Latin names: the genus and a specific characteristic of the organism.
VIRUSES Parasites that are on the border between non-living things and living things, because they don't have cells and they only carry out one vital function which is reproduction.
BACTERIA Unicellular living things with prokaryotic cells and without tissues. They can be parasites or beneficial.
ALGAE Autotrophic protists without tissues that can be unicellular or multicellular and have different colours depending on their most abundant pigment..
PROTISTS A kingdom that includes protozoa and algae.
PROTOZOANS Unicellular and heterotrophic protists that can be parasites or live freely in water.
FUNGI They are always heterotrophic and can be unicellular or multicellular
YEASTS They are unicellular fungi that cause fermentation in certain products such as bread, wine or beer
RHIZOPODS Protozoans that moves with pseudopods. One example is the Amoeba
MOULDS They are fungi that can appear in humid food such as bread, oranges, etc
SPOROZOANS Protozoa that can't move
PSEUDOPODS False feet that rhizopods use to move
