What is accommodation? | adjusting schemas to incorporate new information |
What is object permanence and at what stage does it develop? | the awareness that things continue to exist even when not perceived and occurs in the sensorimotor stage. |
What is conservation and at what stage does it develop? | quantity remains the same despite changes in shape and it occurs in the preoperational stage |
What are ego centrism and theory of mind? At what stage do they occur? | egocentrism=only seeing the world from your own view point theory of mind= people's ideas about their own thoughts and others thoughts and they both occur in the preoperational stage |
What are the main issues with Piaget'ss stages? | the four stages are not as rigid as he proposed and he underestimated children's development. It also does not explain how or why changes in thinking occur |
What is stranger development? when does it develop? | the fear of strangers that infants commonly display, beginning by 8 months of age |
what is attachement? | an emotional tie with another person; shown in young children by their seeking closeness to the caregiver and showing distress on seperation |
What is imprinting? what do humans do instead? | process by which certain animals form attachments during a critical period very early in life. humans prefer to use familiarity, I.e. same food, same book, same people, same home |
What is an example of secure attachment? | child will play happily as long as mommy is there. if she leaves they become distressed |
what is an example of unsecure attachment? | child is less likely to explore and will most likely cling to mommy instead of playing |
