Biology 211: Exam 1

TermDefinition
Emergent Property Cell ---> Tissue ----> Organ ---> Organ System ---> Animal The property where living things become more and more complex going from cellular level up to organ system!
Hypothesis A proposed explanation made on the basis of limited evidence as a starting point for further investigation.
Reducing Atmosphere Also known as a reduction atmosphere, is an atmospheric condition in which oxidation is prevented by removal of oxygen and other oxidising gases or vapours.
Abiotic Synthesis Combining nonliving substances.
Miller-Urey Apparatus A device created to replicate the primeval conditions on earth and to produce chemicals that were essential for life to begin. It included a closed system, allowed for a mixture of gases to be pumped in, also boiling water to allow water vapour.
Macromolecule A large complex molecule, such as nucleic acids, proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids, with relatively large molecular weight.
Protocell Large ordered structure, enclosed by a membrane, that carries out some life activities, such as growth and division.
Vesicle A bubble-like membranous structure that stores and transports cellular products, and digests metabolic wastes within the cell;
DNA A double-stranded nucleic acid that contains the genetic information for cell growth, division, and function.
RNA Abbreviation for ribonucleic acid: a nucleic acid that is generally single stranded and plays a role in transferring information from DNA to protein-forming system of the cell.
Ribozyme An RNA molecule that acts as an enzyme
Oxygen Revolution The Great Oxygen Event. "GOE" The biologically induced appearance of free oxygen (o2) in earth's atmosphere.
Prokaryote Cell An organism that contains all of its DNA in a non membrane enclosed region called a NUCLEOID. "Before Nucleus". Evolved before Eukaryote cells.
Eukaryote Cell An organism that contains most of its DNA in a NUCLEUS, also bound by a double membrane. "True Nucleus"
Cytoplasm The interior of a cell. In Eukaryotes it refers to the region between the nucleus and the membrane.
Bacteria Smallest known cell. "Mycoplasms
Plasma Membrane Functions as the selective barrier that allows the passage of Oxygen, Nutrients and wastes to service the entire cell.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
