Scientific Method

QuestionAnswer
What is the scientific method? a series of steps that are used to investigate and explore a natural occurrence that results in new information
What are the 7 steps of the scientific method in order? 1. Problem 2. Research 3. Hypothesis 4. Experiment 5. Results 6. Conclusion 7. Communicate
Problem Develop a question. Think of a problem that can be solved through experimentation. The outcome must be measurable. Ask these questions: What are you wondering? What do you want to know?
Research Make observations and research your topic
Hypothesis Predict a possible answer to the problem or question
Experiment Develop a procedure. Include a detailed materials list. Test.
Results Modify the procedure if need. Confirm the results by retesting. Include tables, graphs, and photographs
Conclusion Include a statement that accepts or rejects the hypothesis
Communicate Be prepared to present project/paper to an audience
Observation Information collected with the senses. Two types: quantitative and qualitative
Quantitative Measurable/countable observations
Qualitative Describable observations. Not countable
Inference Explaining your observation using senses and prior knowledge. Conclusion based on what you already know. Not an opinion
Variables Any factor that can have more than one value
Independent Variables The variable that is tested. It is changed by the experimenter to see how it affects the dependent variable; Variable that is changed on purpose by the scientist; "I control"
Dependent Variables The factor that you are measuring. The variable that might change as a result of changes made by the scientist to the independent variable; This is the answer you are looking for
Controlled Variable The group that serves as the standard of comparison; It is exposed to the same conditions as the experimental group, except the independent variable is not changed; You need it to make sure the observations were the result of the variable being tested
Constant the factor that stays the same throughout the experiment
Trials The repeated experiments

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
