Cell Test Crosses
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| genetic linkage | the tendency of genes that are located proximal of each other on a chromosome |
| sex-linked traits | the phenotypic expression of an allele related to the chromosomal sex of the individual |
| pedigree | a diagram of family relationships as well as genetics |
| monohybrid cross | hybridization using a single trait with two alleles |
| genotype | genetic constitutin of an individual organism |
| recessive trait | trait that can be carried in a gene without appearing |
| dominant trait | a trait that will appear in the offspring if one parent contributes it |
| law of segregation | principle stating that during the production of gametes the two copies of each hereditary factor segregate so that offspring aquire on factor from each parent |
| independent assortment | formation of random combinations of chromosomes in meiosis and of genes on different pairs of homologous chromosomes |
| dihybrid cross | hybridization using two traits with two alleles each |
| test cross | crossing an organism with dominant genotype to a recessive homozygote for a specific phenotype in order to determine dominance/recessiveness of unknown genotype |
| codominance | a phenomenon in which a single gene has more than one dominant allele |
| incomplete dominance | form of intermediate inheritance in which one allele for a specific trait is not completely dominant over the allele |
| phenotype | a trait that is a consequence of the genotype |
| cross over | occurs when two chromosomes break and reconnect to different end pieces |
| gene locus | the specific location of a gene or DNA sequence or position on a chromosome |
| chromosomal theory of inheritance | the idea that genes are physical in nature and are found in the chromosomes |
| polygenic inheritance | a trait that is controlled by more than one gene locus |
| multiple alleles | any of a set of three or more alleles, only two of which can be present in a diploid organism |
