WORDS TO KNOWDEFINITIONS
Amino Acids Long strings of chemical compounds that are used to make proteins
Atoms The smallest parts of an element that have all the chemical properties of the element
Carbohydrates Starches and sugars; contain C, H, O
Element One of the fundamental substances that can be combined to make up all matter
Energy The ability to do work
Enzymes Proteins produced by living cells that can speed up or slow down biological reactions such as the digestion of food
Glucose A sugar that is an important source of energy in plants and animals
Lipids Fats and oils; high energy source; contain C, H, O
Molecules A group of two or more atoms held together by a bond
Offspring New organisms produced by living things
Organic Molecules Large molecules made up mostly of carbon atoms that are unique to living things and make life possible
Organism A living thing
Reproduction The way in which organisms produce offspring; asexual and sexual
Solvent Any substance that can dissolve another substance, such as water
Spontaneous generation The now-discredited notion that living organisms arose spontaneously from nonliving matter
Homeostasis The ability or tendency of an organism or cell to maintain internal equilibrium by adjusting its physiological processes.
