predation interaction in which one organism (the predator) captures and eats another organism (the prey)
interspecific compation a relationship between two species in which both species compete for limited resources such that both species are negatively acted by the relationship.
symbiosis a relationship in which two different organisms live in close association with each other
parasitism one species (the parasite)feeds on, but does not always kill another species (the host)
mutualism both species benefit
commensalism one species benefits and the other is not affected
species richness is the number of species in community largest near equater
species evenness relative abundance of each species
species area affect a pattern in which the number of species in an area increases, as the area increases
disturbance can alter a community by eliminating or removing organisms or altering resource avaiblity
stability the tendency of a community to maintain a relatively consistent structure
ecological succession is a change in the species compissiton of a community over time
primary succession assembly of a community on newly created habitat occurs in areas that have recently been exposed to the elements and lack od soil. processed from lichins and mosses to climax community
secondary succession occurs in areas where the original ecosystem has been cleared by a disturbance. proceeds from weeds to a climax community
pioneer species a species that colonizes an uninhabited area and that starts an ecological cycle in which many other species become established
climax community a community that after a process of ecological succession has reached a generally stable state
