The cell cycle

Cell continuity This refers to living cells arising from living cells of the same type
Chromosomes They are tightly coiled and highly organised structures of DNA and protein
Gene A short region of a chromosome that contains a code for the production of a protein
Haploid Referred to as one set of chromosomes
Diploid Referred to as two sets of chromosomes
Interphase A long period of the cell cycle during which The cell spends most of its life and carries out its everyday activities
Mitosis Nuclear division in which the number of Chromosomes in the daughter nuclei is the same as in the parent nucleus.
How many stages does the cell cycle consist of? Three (3) - Interphase, mitosis and cell division
Cell division (cytokinesis) This is the process of the whole cell physically dividing in two.
Mitosis consists of four short-lived distinct phases. Name them. Prophase, Anaphase, Anaphase and Telophase
Meiosis A type of cell division in which four daughter cells are produced, each containing half the number of chromsosomes as the parent cell.
What is Cancer? It is a group of disorders in which cells lose control over the rate of mitosis and cell division
What are cancer-causing agents called? Carcinogens
List some common causes of cancer Ultraviolet(UV) light, cigarette smoke, Human Papilloma Virus, Radon gas, Asbestos fires
