| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Atmosphere | Blanket of gas surrounding Earth. |
| Biosphere | All of Earth's organisms and the environments in which they live. |
| Geosphere | The part of the Earth from its surface to its center. |
| Hydosphere | All the water in the Earth's oceans, lakes, rivers, seas, and glaciers plus the water in the atmosphere. |
| Dependent Variable | Factor in an experiment that can change if the independent variable is changed. |
| Hypothesis | Testable explanation of a situation. |
| Independent Variable | Factor that is manipulated by the experimenter in an experiment. |
| Scientific Law | A principle that describes the behavior of a natural phenomenon. |
| Scientific Theory | An explanation based on many observation during repeated experiments. |
| Fractional Crystallization | Process in which different minerals crystallize from magma at different temperatures, removing elements from magma. |
| Partial Melting | Process in which different minerals melt into magma at different temperatures, changing its composition. |
| Pegmatite | Vein deposit of extremely large grained minerals that can contain rare ores. |
| Cleavage | When a mineral breaks along planes where bonding is weak. |
| Fracture | When a mineral breaks into pieces with jagged edges. |
| Hardness | Measure of how easily a mineral can be scratched. |
| Luster | The way a mineral reflects light from its surface. |
| Streak | Color a mineral leaves when it is rubbed across an un-glazed porcelain plate or when it is broken up into a powder. |
| Cememtation | Process of sedimentary rock formation that occurs when dissolved minerals precipitate out of groundwater and wither a new mineral grows between the sediment grains or the mineral grows between and over the grains. |
| Lithification | The physical and chemical processes that transforms sediments into sedimentary rocks. |
| Natural Occuring | Not man made. |
| Inorganic | Not a part of a living thing. |
| Definite Crystalline Structure | One of 6 shapes that repeating atoms can form in minerals. |
| Solid | Not a gas or liquid, has a definite shape and volume. |
| Specific Composition | Certain elements make up the mineral in specific combination. |
