Atmosphere Blanket of gas surrounding Earth.
Biosphere All of Earth's organisms and the environments in which they live.
Geosphere The part of the Earth from its surface to its center.
Hydosphere All the water in the Earth's oceans, lakes, rivers, seas, and glaciers plus the water in the atmosphere.
Dependent Variable Factor in an experiment that can change if the independent variable is changed.
Hypothesis Testable explanation of a situation.
Independent Variable Factor that is manipulated by the experimenter in an experiment.
Scientific Law A principle that describes the behavior of a natural phenomenon.
Scientific Theory An explanation based on many observation during repeated experiments.
Fractional Crystallization Process in which different minerals crystallize from magma at different temperatures, removing elements from magma.
Partial Melting Process in which different minerals melt into magma at different temperatures, changing its composition.
Pegmatite Vein deposit of extremely large grained minerals that can contain rare ores.
Cleavage When a mineral breaks along planes where bonding is weak.
Fracture When a mineral breaks into pieces with jagged edges.
Hardness Measure of how easily a mineral can be scratched.
Luster The way a mineral reflects light from its surface.
Streak Color a mineral leaves when it is rubbed across an un-glazed porcelain plate or when it is broken up into a powder.
Cememtation Process of sedimentary rock formation that occurs when dissolved minerals precipitate out of groundwater and wither a new mineral grows between the sediment grains or the mineral grows between and over the grains.
Lithification The physical and chemical processes that transforms sediments into sedimentary rocks.
Natural Occuring Not man made.
Inorganic Not a part of a living thing.
Definite Crystalline Structure One of 6 shapes that repeating atoms can form in minerals.
Solid Not a gas or liquid, has a definite shape and volume.
Specific Composition Certain elements make up the mineral in specific combination.
