| Gap theory | a theory that holds that there was a long period of time between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2 |
| theistic evolution | tries to interpret biblical statements to support evolution as God's method of creaton |
| Day-Age Theory | also known as Long-Day Theory; theory that holds that the 7 days in Genesis 1 were long periods of time of ages |
| progressive creationism | theory that holds the earth is millions of years old and that at particular moments in time, God created new creatures |
| antidiluvian | before the Flood |
| postdiluvian | after the Flood |
| fossil | any direct or indirect evidence of a once-living organism |
| deluge | Noah's Flood |
| radiometric dating method | measures the decay of a radioactive substance into a nonradioactive substance |
| phylogenetic tree | a diagram showing the supposed relationships between organisms and showing the supposed steps of evolution |
| genetic load | the number of mutations an organism hs |
| punctuated equilibrium | the view that evolution occurred in periods or leaps of time, while at other times no or very little evolution took place |
| anthropology | the study of the origin and the physical, social, and cultural history of man |
| descent with modification | Darwin's idea that newer forms of organisms are modified descendants of much older similar organisms |
| survival of the fittest | Darwin's idea that organisms that had the strongest, best characteristics would survive, reproduce, and pass those characteristics on to future generations |
| mutation-selection theory | the theory that mutations supply variations and that natural selection determines which variations survive |
| theory of need | Lamark's theory where an organism must need a structure in order for that structure to evolve |
| theory of use and disuse | Lamark's theory that if the structure is used, it will continue to evolve, otherwise, it will degenerate and disappear |
| theory of inheritance of acquired characteristics | Lamark's theory that organisms can pass acquired characteristics on to their offspring; ex: giraffes stretching their necks caused their offspring to have long necks |
