| How do algae that have secondary pigments benefit from having them? | They allow algae to absorb light energy from wavelengths that are not absorbed by water. |
| How do diatoms store their food? why is this beneficial? | They store their food as oil. Oil is less dense so they can float to the surface and absorb energy from the sun for photosynthesis. |
| what is the source of diatomaceous earth? How is it used? | Fall from silica walls and accumulate on the ocean floor. It is collected and used as an abrasive and a filtering agent. |
